song of the day

Will-Nilly With The Billy

Did I tell you guys we found a billy club hidden in the walls this past weekend?

We found a billy club hidden in the walls this past weekend!

Block Mommy Robot

After lunch today I heard a loud crash from Yuula's room so while I was waiting for the processor to run I went to check it out. She had destroyed whatever previous incarnation her blocks where in and now wanted to build "Mommy".

So we did.

That's a nice sweater Mommy.

Gervais Surveys

I realized the other day, after a brief yet embarrassing exchange with some friends from across the pond, that I am woefully under-exposed to the genius of he who is Ricky Gervais. I'll spare you (and my pride) the details, but it has forced me to hunt and gather as much as I could find as much material I could find for free online and begin what I can only describe as an in-depth investigation into all I apparently have been missing. And why not?

He's frigin hilarious!

Broke On Through

Just another Sunday morning, right?

Nope.

Today we being the transformation.

Step #1: Tear out the chimney and cut holes in our bedroom closet and into the roof of the A-frame (don't ask, our house is strange).

Step #2: Lots of demolition and tearing down of insulation, shingles, sheetrock, and countless 2x4's that littered the insides of this slapped together shack of ours, each with its very own collection of bent and busted nails sticking out every which way imaginable. And cleaning up a ton of garbage that at one point was up to our knees.

Step #3: Frame out the walls that will become our new hallway.

Side note: Up until yesterday, our house did not have a proper hallway, anywhere.

Step #4: Partially build what will become a bedroom wall extension and the inside of our new closet.

Step #5: Surprise Laura.

{thanks Daddy}

song of the day

Her First Wing-Giving

Utterly Gutted

Well

There's no going back now

Are we crazy to do this?

We have no idea how it will turn out, but we're going for it anyway

PS: Today we discovered that a washer/dryer all-in-one machine exists.... that's a game changer folks.

Glorified Glue

Is this awesome or stupid?

I can't tell

There's Angels All Over The Yard

I was shoveling the driveway after lunch and I looked over to see Yuula lying flat on her back in the front yard. She wasn't moving. Just lying there. Momentary concern. Then her arms flapped wildly and I immediately realized what I was looking at, as I've seen it so many times before. We all have.

She was making angels.

We're kind of done always asking her "Where'd you learn to do that?". We just figure she's waking up in the middle of the night and doing thorough research on Wikipedia of the history of the world or something. I guess snow angels come in some time between the extinction of the dinosaurs and the Mets winning their first World Series. It's the only logical explanation.

But check out this fairly legit snow angel.

Hard to see, but it is there. Maybe adjust your monitor. Or come visit before the snow melts. Those are your options.

I got back to shoveling the drive, to no avail. I looked back across the yard and she was still at it.

Or maybe it was nap time.

Leave Your Bedroom Despite The Weather

song of the day

two songs about disco on their new album is curiously incredible

Cy And Bye And Sigh

So I haven't paid any attention to baseball in months and look what happens. Apparently back in December the Mets traded last year's knight in shining armor, R.A. Dickey to the Bluejays for some these dudes up above. That and some other collateral damage. Flip-flopping a young catcher and a washed up catcher for a younger and a washer upper catcher as well, but I guess Thole had to go because ain't no one else catching that wicked Cy Young knuckle ball. So now they got Reyes and Dickey up in Canada. Lucky ducks. Lucky geese.

We get a couple of fine young men in D'Arnaud & Syndergaard, a catcher and a pitcher, but we let go of the only thing that had 90% of the Mets fans watching games after the All-Star break last year...

...c'mon now. I'm gonna have to route for Toronto now.

Or Just Eat It Raw

I Rest My Face

A study from the University of Southern Queensland, published in the Radiation Protection Dosimetry Journal, found that beards block 90 to 95 percent of UV rays, thereby slowing the aging process and reducing the risk of skin cancer. Got asthma? Pollens and dust simply get stuck in that lustrous facial hair. Additionally, all that hair retains moisture and protects from the wind, keeping you looking young and fresh-faced. What’s more, shaving is usually the cause of ingrown hairs and bacterial infections that lead to acne.

Sooooooooooo, I ain't ever shaving again.

Warming Up To The Rink

Laura took the child to the rink this morning. I stayed home to buckle down. Met up with bestie Isa and dragged her around and around, probably knocking over many small children along the way. I heard she did well, played with others, shared her ball, rollerstepped about the place and ran in horror from Elmo. But still no chicken dance. I say good grief.

This is twice I've missed the rollerskating. Don't really care to go for three.

From Death To Birth

Saw a lot of Nirvana videos popping up today, but he killed himself in April. Then I saw that it's his birthday. 46th. sigh. But I'm glad we've at least moved on to celebrating his birth/life instead of the day he blew his face off.

song of the day

I've got a backlog of videos I wanted to upload going back from the beginning of February so... you'll be okay

I Want To Eat This

This here is the Pandanus tectorius, or the hala fruit. It's from Hawaii, but sometimes Micronesia. I wanna eat one. The fruit can be eaten raw or cooked and is a major source of food in Micronesia, especially in the atolls. The fibrous nature of the fruit also serves as a natural dental floss. The tree's leaves are often used as flavoring for sweet dishes such as kaya jam, and are also said to have medicinal properties. It is also used in Sri Lankan cookery, where the leaves are used to flavor a variety of curries. Leaves were used by the Polynesians to make baskets, mats, outrigger canoe sails, thatch roofs and grass skirts.

There is nothing I don't love about this.

Think they sell these trees at Home Depot?

They Can't All Be, And They Shouldn't Anyways

One of those days. We all have them. Sorta went by without much fuss, but you're still glad you woke up and got out of bed. Yuula was nuts and did not trash her room. I had lotsa of phone calls and very few emails. Laura got a new tire on the van and cooked a delicious dinner.

We did laundry this evening but laughed at Yuula the whole time as she threw clothes and climbed the mountain of pillows and blankets on our bed. We're supposed to be doing some home renovation research, her on hers me on mine, but I'm blogging. Shh don't tell.

Bathroom Design Is Redrum

Doing a little late night bathroom planning from bed tonight. I think we got ideas for tile and flooring and placement of toilets and so on. We were encouraged. Then we watched a video on how to tile a shower. Then we were discouraged. It's gonna be a doozy, that's all I know for sure. In a day that featured the discovery of unfortunately placed beams and fortunately dead mice, this is ending on an up.

Plus we're watching The Shining while we gather ideas, which is ironic, because I can't think of another movie that  more accurately displays the utter disrespect for the sanctity of the bathroom as when Jack takes an axe to that lovely wood door. Those doors cost money, and I could've used that one.

Here's grouting!

The Room Becomes A Warning

song of the day

#1 : I like when English singers sing in English

#2 : How? at so young!

#3 : Cut an album already before you realize and ruin it all

Just Jumpin' And Chattin'

Lightening The Load-Bearings

A day of semi-progress and semi-leisure. Moving towards a goal and purging the house of unnwanteds. Like dead things. Dead thing Mikey, dead things. Now vaulted ceilings almost seem like a must in addition to a want.

After our gross-out itchy morning of heeby-jeebies and pink glass fiber we cleaned up and did a recycling run and a storage run. We are getting out moneys worth out of that unit. We could win an award I think. It's one of the things I'm most proud of in the whole world, locked behind an orange metal door on the 3rd floor of a warehouse on business 209. Check it out.

Lunch at Sarah's, cuz cheap and easy. They're menu leaves little to be desired, but it's conveniently located so...

The ice festival is going on. It's better that last years but, that really isn't saying much. We put Yuula on this throne to get a shot but I guess her frozen butt noticed the throne was made of ice before I could focus so you get crying baby ice queen.

We stopped in at the record shop to see what we could see. I picked up used copies of Talking Book, a Donovan comp and Nina Simone's classic covers album Here Comes The Sun. I also delved into their bargain bin where you can get 20 lps for $10. So I did. I don't mind a little nicked up cover art. My twenty included Simon & Garfunkel's Bookends, Joni Mitchell's Blue, Carpenter's Close To Me, Jackson Browne's For Everyman, Cat Stevens Teaser And The Firecat and Air Supply's Greatest Hits. Hey I needed to get to 20. Threw a few weird one and some holiday albums in and I was at the checkout, with a handful of plastic sheets to boot.

We returned home to try and do a little more excavation upstairs but didn't get all that far. Dinner, skype with aunt Dani and now the nightly Wibbly Pig viewing where of course Laura is the one who fell asleep and Yuula is wide-eyed and ready for some forward rolls.  Maybe I'll chase her into her room with some dead attic critters.

Like From A Tree

song of the day

not the biggest fan of the Minutemen and a moderate Stooges admirer (from afar) so this is easily my favorite Mike Watt project, by far
and this isn't even the song I wanted to put up, but it's the only one I could find

Forwarding Her Rolls

What a silly Saturday.

Started off by rushing out of the house early this morning, family in tow, to get there and back to Staples in time for Laura to leave early for the gym before work, but we needed a new internet hub USB for the PC because I've been without for a couple days and I can't take it anymore so we went and dropped $40 on a big box with a little stick in it and when we got back home I noticed that it was just that the cable had fallen out of the back of the monitor so I wasn't getting a signal so that was annoying but Laura was able to return the thing between the gym and work so that was ... nothing.

The rest of the day was spent organizing the free space, or the lack of, on here, and watching Yuula work on her forward rolls. They're getting pretty good. Maybe she'll do one for you all someday. Then i had to sit thru an entire viewing of Star Trek: Insurrection waiting for Yuula to finish her chicken.

For now, girl's in bed, other girl's on her way home, and I am packing it up, only getting 2/3 thru what I was trying to today. Getting sidetracked by non stamp collector and talking tacos.

It's been a silly Saturday.

She Loves Us Ten

Political Drama For Me, Gosling For Her

Friday night movie, night, where you been?

Harlem Shake

I'm not one for memes or internet sensations. I've still never seen the Gangnam style. But this Harlem Shake business is hilarious and in the right hands, brilliant. I spent about an hour when Laura got home and took a nap to indulge myself and came up with a few favorites.

The gist is, you start off in an everyday situation but one cat is doing a silly little dance. The when the beat drops all hell breaks loose. You'll get the idea.

Watch them all, they get increasingly funnier...

She's Buried Behind The Walls

Explored a new camera app tonight and took some halfsies and sketch-style photos. Oh glorious. Just a lazy evening really, pizza and leftover cake.

But I found an app called "Ghost" so I thought I'd try it out.

I had Laura convinced that we were haunted. She was ready to pack up and move out when I showed her this one.

After 15 minutes of her being genuinely freaked out I confessed, she threw my phone, smacked me and now I'm blogging while she reads Yuula a bedtime story. Hope it's not a spooky one!

Rights Wrongs While Others Cling

song of the day

one of my favorites

Love, So Be It

Valentine's is a tough one. I don't buy into the holiday and all, but in my aging boredom it's nice to have a little something to differentiate between days when they all blur together and turn life into one blinding flash of routine and repetition until you finally perish of cynicism and halitosis.

Some wine, candles, flowers, and the worst red velvet cake ever concocted.

Dinner was heart-shaped

Sweet potato and kale chicken patties over a nice bed of greens... heart healthy on heart day

This will be empty by the end of tonight
